Quality Assurance: a scheme with credibility and integrity that satisfies the needs and increases
the confidence of our Members’ customers and the ultimate client. It includes
individual categories for design, manufacture & erection and delivers independent
certification operating under UKAS (UK
Accreditation Service). The scheme is mandatory for manufacturers, integrates
with ISO 9000 & ISO 14001. It is available at two levels: Q-Mark and Q-Mark
Plus – further details are available in a separate leaflet.

Monitoring of Regulations and Standards: Dr. Luke Whale is retained as technical advocate to monitor International, European
and British Standards and Building Regulations.
Lobbying re New Legislation, Regulations and Standards: influencing the European Executive, the Westminster Government, the Scottish
Executive and National and Regional Assemblies to ensure that all relevant new
legislation is practical to implement and is positive towards Timber Frame.

Promoting Research: with a total commitment to continuous improvement, UKTFA was a contributor to TF2000 multi-storey project and is the industry voice in many PII and similar research projects. UKTFA collaborates with Centres of Excellence such as BRE, TRADA, Napier University – Centre of Timber Engineering, CITB and The Zethus Centre.
Insulation Suppliers Forum: Coordinates a technical liaison group for Member companies to ensure the provision
of good reliable specifications and guidance.
NHBC and Zurich: UKTFA has ongoing liaison at the Technical and the Engineered Wood Products
Committees.

Voluntary Code of Practice: Guidance on several topics is currently in preparation – all EWP systems are represented.
Education & Training
Health & Safety: The UKTFA in conjunction with the Health & Safety Executive are producing
a timber frame version of their “Absolutely Essential” Health and Safety Toolkit
to be published in 2004.
Health & Safety: Preparing a Code of Practice for the Timber Frame industry in conjunction with
the Health & Safety Executive.
Training cd: This gives a detailed briefing on the following:

- Features and Benefits for office based technical staff
- Key Aspects for site based staff.

A Pocket Guide to Timber Frame Construction: a site-friendly booklet covering the do’s and don’ts of timber frame erection.
Erector Training: developing an industry based timber frame erector training and qualification
scheme. This involves distance learning, cd and other modern interactive learning
experiences as well as developing skills of new entrants into our growing industry.
Initial Funding for development is in place from the Scottish Forest Industry
Cluster and the European Social Fund.
Manufacturing Training: developing an industry based timber frame manufacture training and qualification
scheme. This similarly involves distance learning, cd and modern interactive learning
experiences as well as developing skills of new entrants. A European application
for funding is being progressed.

Website: UKTFA owns and operates an easy access, portal-style website www.timber-frame.org with media, builders & developers, self-build, photo library, news and events, technical and education sections. It has a large Members’ Only Section that is specifically designed to keep Members updated in all areas without being interruptive – information there when you need it.
Manufacturer Search Facility: the website now includes a search engine to help clients locate a timber frame
manufacturer dependent on location of project, type of development, type of building
and service required.
Timber Frame Designers, Erectors, Financial Services and Industry Suppliers Search
Facility: the website has recently been extended to include search facilities for all our
Member categories.
Market statistics: UKTFA prepares the only comprehensive set of market statistics covering all
aspects of Timber Frame. The report – confidential to Members – covers market
trends, industry structure, productive capacity and state of the market including
private builder, registered social landlord, commercial and self-build development.
Bi-monthly Briefing: UKTFA issues a Members briefing every two months.
